Description

Captured ship: Green Parrot or Il Papagallo Verdo (master Jan Jansen Braeggele [of Greenock, resident] of Stettin, otherwise John Johnson Brackhill, Brakel, Braeggel) [second capture: see HCA 32/147/26 for the first].

History: a Swedish merchant ship ([dogger], 40 tons, 6 men, built in Holland, bought at Rotterdam in January 1671/1672, previously named Golden Butt), bound from Londonderry to Le Havre and Ostend, laden with butter; taken in early March 1672/1673 by the privateer Dover (Ignatius Brett commanding) and brought into Dover [on 10/20 March 1672/1673].

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: special interrogatories;
  • [CP 2]: four examinations taken at Dover, 10 March 1672/1673;
  • [CP 3]: abstract of 12 ship's papers;
  • [CP 4]: (Edinburgh) certificate (parchment, hanging seal) for Henry Hope as factor of the Stapel in Rotterdam, 22 November 1672 (endorsed by HCA as Brett, 14 April 1673).

Ships Papers, numbered SP 1-5, 7, 11, 13:-

  • SP 1: certificat of the [Governor and Council] of Swedish Pomerania [Wolgast, 22 July 1671] (Latin, very badly water-damaged, with hanging seal);
  • SP 2: pass for Bremen under the cocket of Leith, 9 July 1672;
  • SP 3: Edinburgh pass 27 June 1672 (in Latin);
  • SP 4: Amsterdam admiralty certificate of ship's dimensions, 1 September 1672 (in Dutch);
  • SP 5: bill of lading, Amsterdam to Fayal, 2 September 1672 (in Italian);
  • SP 6: [wanting - restored?];
  • SP 7: Amsterdam customs pass, 2 August 1672;
  • SP 8-SP 10: [wanting - restored?];
  • SP 11: [damaged] letter Henry Hope [factor for the Scots Staple in Holland] to Fayal, 2 September 1672 (Italian);
  • SP 12: [wanting - restored?];
  • SP 13: (numbered inside cover, but not included in abstracts) one notebook with an original scriber.

Extra information:-

  • See SP Calendar of State Papers Domestic, 1673, p.28, and SP 29/334, no. 135 (Lawson Carlile to [Williamson], 10 March 1673). Said by Carlile to have been taken by a Dutch privateer and then been retaken by the Dover privateer, but this is not stated in the examinations - only that the ship had met a Dutch privateer off the Isle of Wight.
