Description

Captured ship: Green Parrot of Stettin, otherwise Il Papagallo Verdo (master Jan Jansen Braeggele of Greenock, Scotland (resident of Stettin), otherwise John Johnson Brackhill) [first capture: see also HCA 32/1947/27].

History: a Swedish merchant ship (dogger, 30-40 tons/30 lasts, built in Holland, [bought at Rotterdam in January 1671/1672, previously named Golden Butt]), bound from Amsterdam to Londonderry in Ireland (and from thence to Phiall [Fayal, the Azores]), laden with deals, soap, madder, currants, raisins, prunes, starch, nutmeg, cloves, mace, cinnamon, pepper, aniseed, sweet oil and Swedish iron and other goods; taken on 21 September/1 October 1672 off the Start, after a 2-hour chase from about 2 leagues off Dartmouth, by HMS Dragon (John Chamberlain commanding) and brought first into Torbay and then into Plymouth on 6/16 October 1672. The master burnt his instructions during the chase, and said he had thrown the bill of sale overboard about 8 months earlier, during another chase.
