Description

Captured ship: Grave of Holland [otherwise Graaf van Holland] or Earl of Holland (master John Johnson, otherwise Jan Jansen).

History: a Dutch privateer, bound on a cruise (from a port within the jurisdiction of the Amsterdam admiralty); taken on 21/31 December 1673 by HMS Ruby (Stephen Pyend commanding) and brought into London.

Court Paper, numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: abstract of six ship's papers;
  • [CP 2]: letter of [Samuel] Pepys to Captain Pynd [Pyend], HMS Ruby at the Nore, 18 February 1673/1674, re his unnamed privateer prize [added in 2024 from HCA 32/1954/17 Misc].

Ships Papers, numbered SP 1-6:-

  • [SP 1]: Dutch privateering commission issued by Willem III, Prince of Orange at The Hague, 27 September 1673, to David Le Compte and partners for Jan Jansen to command an unnamed privateer, registered by the [Amsterdam] admiralty, 21 October 1673 and annotated at the Texel 13 December 1673;
  • [SP 2-4]: three printed copies of the above commission;
  • [SP 5]: States General order on prizes taken by privateers and sent into allied ports, 9 January 1673
  • [SP 6]: States General proclamation regulating privateering [10 October 1673, damaged]
