Description

Captured ship: Golden Serpent of Copenhagen, otherwise Vergulde Slang (master Claus Hendrickson of Gothenburg, otherwise Claes Hindrichs).

History: a Danish-Norwegian merchant ship (100-110 tons, built at Flensburg about 15 months before), bound from La Rochelle and St Martin de Ré to Hamburg, laden with syrup, ginger, sumac, skins for making buff, indigo, sugar and brandy; taken around 23 April/3 May 1672 about a league and a half off Falmouth, 3 leagues of the Lizard by HMS Newcastle (Anthony Langston commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: standing interrogatories;
  • [CP 2]: two examinations taken at Plymouth, 7 May 1672;
  • [CP 3]: letter in Dutch from Hamburg to London insupport of a claim [by Jacob Huneken], 25 June 1672;
  • [CP 4]: HCA note re claim, 8 July 1674;
  • [CP 5]: undated memo (in Dutch) of goods laden for Jacob Huneken at Hamburg and the progress of his claim.

  • 38 papers were brought into the Court on 13 May 1672. See HCA 30/882, p. 56; [these papers were probably restored];
  • See IND 1/9012, f.77: goods ordered to be sold, 7 June 1672; lading condemned except goods claimed, 12 June 1672;
  • See also Calendar of State Papers Domestic, 1672, pp 250-251, 431;
  • Owners: Simon de Petcombe of Copenhagen, said by the master to be sole owner. Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve (otherwise Guldenlove, Guldenlewe), the King of Denmark-Norway's illegitimate brother and viceroy of Norway, was also said to have been a part-owner.
