Description

Two captured ships: St Francis of Nieuwpoort (suspected of Zierikzee) (master Mathias Neut of Nieuwpoort, otherwise Mathew Neut, Neate) AND one buss, name unknown. These have been described consecutivele below.

History of St Francis: a Flemish (Spanish Netherlands) fishing vessel (dogger, 21-24 lasts, 13 men, built in Holland, bought at Nieuwpoort from Dutch owner), bound from Zierikzee on a fishing voyage, laden with herring, salt and cask; taken on or before 17/27 October 1673 by HMS Constant Warwick (Joseph Harris commanding) and brought into Great Yarmouth.

St Francis, Court Papers, numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: note by Richard Bower of Yarmouth, 5 November 1673;
  • [CP 2]: examination of Mathew Neate, taken at Yarmouth, 30 October 1673;
  • [CP 3]: examination taken at Yarmouth, 28 October 1673;
  • [CP 4]: two examinations taken at Yarmouth, 28 October 1673;
  • [CP 5]: two examinations taken at Yarmouth, 1 November 1673

St Francis: Ships Papers, numbered SP 1-2:-

  • SP 1: certificate of 1 March 1673 [NS] from Thomas Owst [?], of the English Carthusians at Nieuwpoort, that Mathias Neut is of Nieuwpoort;
  • SP 2: pass from James, Duke of York, for Mathew Neut as master of St Teresa, belonging to Flemish subjects of Spain, 3 January 1665/6.

  • St Francis: see IND 1/9012 f.16: restored by order 12 December 1673;
  • Owners of the St Francis: Captain Holderhough, otherwise Goldenhead, Cornelius van Midelant, Francis Piper, John Bouden and the master, all of Nieuwpoort;

AND

History of the buss, name unknown: a Flemish (Spanish Netherlands) fishing vessel (buss); taken on or before 23 October/3 November 1673 by HMS Antelope ([Richard White] commanding), and brought into Great Yarmouth about 3 pm on 25 October/5 November 1673.

Buss, name unknown, Court Papers, numbered CP 6-8:-

  • [CP 6]: critical letter by Richard Bower of Great Yarmouth to the Prize Commissioners in London, 31 October 1673;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: two examinations taken at Yarmouth, 25 October 1673.

Extra information:-

  • Buss, name unknown: see IND 1/9012 f.16v: ship and goods condemned 16 February 1673/1674.
