Captured ship: Fortune of Newcopen / Nykøbing (master Jan Pieterss Leeuw of Edam, otherwise Jan Peterson Lieuw, Jean Pietersen Leuw)
History: a Danish-Norwegian merchant ship ([galliot], 150 tons, built at Zaandam, bought at Amsterdam, October 1669, belonging to the Queen of Denmark as sole owner), bound from Oleron, La Rochelle and St Martin de Ré to Hamburg, laden with salt, brandy, wine, vinegar, molasses and paper; taken on 11/21 May 1672 about 4 leagues off Falmouth by HMS Newcastle (Anthony Langstone commanding), and brought into Falmouth the same day.
NB: There are 2 ports named Nykøbing in Denmark - Nykøbing Mors, in the north of Jutland, and Nykøbing Falster, on the island Falster, facing the island Lolland. The third examinant (examined separately on 22 May, and apparently not in the crew, was a Dane of Copenhagen who knew the port Nykøbing 'on the island of Laland' [Lolland, meaning Nykøbing Falster] and deposed that he had never seen the ship there and that in any case she was too large to enter the shallow port.
