Description

Captured ship: Fame otherwise Faam [Renown, or Rénomée] of Harlingen in the Dutch province of Friesland (master Douwe Hijlles of Harlingen otherwise Doway Ellis).

History: a Dutch merchant ship (150 tons), bound from La Rochelle to Danzig or Konigsberg, laden with salt and vinegar; taken on 7/17 March 1671/1672 off the Isle of Wight, by HMS Gloucester ([John] Holmes commanding), and brought into Portsmouth on 11/21 March 1671/1672.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1:-

  • [CP 1]: one examination at Portsmouth, [March] 1672, with note that this took place before the interrogatories were received from the Court and that the master and crew had fled the ship before they could be re-examined.
