Administrative / biographical background

The Chemical and Biotechnology Directorate engaged with the chemical industry on both a domestic and international level. The directorate assisted industry with both trade matters and state aid funding arrangements. The directorate engaged with industry on speciality chemical products (rubber, plastics, paints, dyes) and any Health and Safety implications. They would also work with the chemical industry on innovation and improving competitiveness. The Biotechnology side focussed on supporting research and development and transfer of technologies into industries such as biopharmaceuticals, pharmaceuticals and agribusiness (fertilisers and pesticides).
