Folios 118-121. A letter from the Duke of Newcastle, dated at York [Yorkshire]. Reports that he has a loyal person inspecting what horses are kept secretly at the coast; and that he has received no commissions for the officers in his regiment. Advises that while the vast majority of aldermen are Church of England, the Mayor [?John Squire] is a non-conformist, though a loyal man; and that Sir William Blackett and Mr Devison should be aldermen again, something he believes his cousin Edward Widdrington and Sir William Creagh will confirm. Seeks direction as to whether he should give deputations [?deputy lieutenancies] to [Roman] Catholics, but advises there is feeling against it. Lord Fairfax of Gilling [?East, Yorkshire] [?West, Yorkshire] has been most industrious and helpful. Requests permission to return to Wellbeck [Welbeck, Nottinghamshire]. Acknowledges a request to give an account of the Corporation of Newcastle [Northumberland].
