The records were held by the Home Office Prisons Department until the late 1980s whereupon they were moved to semi-current storage in the Home Office headquarters for appraisal and review. The records were passed from the Home Office to the Ministry of Justice in 2007 when the prisons function passed to that body.

The Directorate of Industries and Supplies was created in 1970. It comprised a Production Engineering Unit; a Work Study Unit; Management Accountant Unit; and a Farms and Gardens Unit. By 1975 a Prison Industries Unit had been added.
