Folios 583-584: William Cuming, HMS Prince of Wales, off Rochefort. Recommends two men for warrants; John Strong and Edward Gowland. Strong is 38 and served six years in HMS Victorious in the East Indies as a Boatswain's Mate but was rated Yeoman of the Sheets, then was appointed acting Boatswain of HMS Vulcan for 18 months at Madras, came home as a supernumerary in HMS Leopard in June 1803 and since then has served as Chief Boatswain's Mate in HMS Prince of Wales. His certificates are lodged with Messrs R & A Toulmin, [Navy Agents] 23 [Surrey Street] Strand. Gowland, also 38, was originally apprenticed as a shipwright at South Shields, cast away as Carpenter of a ship which foundered on the Goodwin Sands and was then impressed and served in HMS Windsor Castle as Carpenter's Crew, HMS Russell as Caulker and Carpenter's Mate and then volunteered as Carpenter's Mate in HMS Prince of Wales.
