Description

Folios 581-582: William Cumberland, Hastings. Reports that when he left Aux Cayes in the island of Santo Domingo the French treasurer, [Jistrand ?], told him that General [Jean Baptiste] Brunet had distributed public money among his officers which, according to the articles of capitulation, should have been given up. On his arrival at Jamaica he consulted Admiral Sir John Duckworth, Commander in Chief Jamaica, and then ordered a search to be made. A proportion of the money was left with each of the officers who had concealed money about their persons. He considered the money taken from General Brunet to be the property of the officers to whom he surrendered, and when the general left HMS Pique he thanked Captain Cumberland for his treatment. As for the charge that effects were plundered, he gave orders against this and is sure none were taken. Some time after HMS Pique had sailed from Jamaica, General Brunet began his complaints to Admiral Duckworth about Captain Cumberland. When the ship returned to Jamaica, a court of enquiry was held into his conduct, the results of which he is satisfied with. Refers the Admiralty to Admiral Duckworth's letter and to the report of the court of enquiry.
