Description

Folios 235-236: Lieutenant B J Bromwich, writing in the absence of John Culverhouse, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. At Captain Culverhouse is at Lancaster, is replying to the letter about Gottfreid Behrend and Samuel Bond. Behrend was impressed on shore on 20 February. He is a native of Holland who volunteered for the British service and is now aboard HMS Princess. Bond was given up by his master, and American captain, and since he had no documents was sent aboard the Princess on 23 February. He has made inquiries at all of the rendezvous about any Danish Master who might have been impressed, but says any such person would have been released immediately.

Folios 237-238: enclosed with folios 235-236. Letter from W Kohne, Danish Consul, Liverpool, to the Admiralty dated 31 March 1804. Asks for the release of Gottfreid Behrend Jens, a sailor belonging to the Danish ship Vandringsmann, Captain H V Matthiesen, now lying at Liverpool. Jens was pressed from the neutral Danish ship despite the protests of Captain Matthiesen, who was in danger of being pressed himself, as actually happend to another Danish Captain, Andreas Boysen. Boysen was held overnight at the rendezvous until the Consul was able to secure his release. Captain Matthiesen is now unable to complete his voyage without the men who have been impressed from aboard his ship, to say nothing of the insult offered to a neutral power.
