Folios 212-213: John Culverhouse, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Encloses [no longer present] the weekly return. Joseph Scott, said to be a Quaker, was impressed on 2 February and sent to Plymouth on the Friendship tender on 12 March. He is a seamen from Whitehaven, age 22, and has no protection.
Folio 214. enclosed with folios 212-213. Undated note that Joseph Scott, a Quaker, was impressed at Liverpool and sent in the Friendship tender to Plymouth. While at Liverpool he was held aboard HMS Princess.
Folio 215: Attached to folio 214. Letter from seven named men of Maryport, Cumbria, to Joseph Astle, Read Cross Street, Liverpool, dated 3 March 1804. They write in reply to Mr Astle's letters to Philip Scott, informing him that his son Joseph was impressed at Liverpool. They ask for Mr Astle's assistance in obtaining his freedom. Joseph Scott was born at Allonby on 19 November 1781 to Quaker parents and has always behaved in a sober and orderly manner. PS Scott was taken aboard the frigate HMS Princess, Commander Samuel Colquitt.
Folios 216-217: Attached to folio 214. Letter from William Curtis, Lombard Street, to the Admiralty dated 22 March 1804. The bearer of the letter is Joseph Smith, a leader of the Quakers, who has asked for his assistance concerning a young member of their society who has been impressed at Liverpool. Mr Smith will tell his own story. Knows him well and he should be believed when he says that the principles of their religion do not admit of bearing arms. Has introduced Mr Smith so he can lay the case before the Lords of the Admiralty and is confident his efforts will be successful.
