Description

Folio 498: Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. In reply to letter of 15 October inclosing applications and indentures, for John Hollas, William Kirkman, William Cortney and John Nanna, he states that William Kirkman agrees that he ran away to join up and that John Nanna was impressed at Chester.

Folios 499-500: enclosure with folios 498. Memorial of William Cortney ship builder of Chester. He complains that his workforce has declined as his men are afraid of being impressed and he is increasingly unable to carry out the work he does for the navy and requests the release of John Nanna. Signed by E Bushell, mayor and John [Un?], Alderman.

Folios 501-502: enclosure with folio 498. Letter dated 11 October 1804 by Joseph Hollas, 56 Old [?], Bolton. He requests that his lawful apprentice, William Kirkman, who has been impressed, be discharged, Countersigned by Henry Casson, Church Warden.

Folios 503-504: enclosure with folio 498. Letter dated 13 October 1804 by Lorentz Hansen, Liverpool. Concerning Carl Fried. Torsberg, Mattias Gronros and Jacob Chalen, with protection from Consul Grill in London and Jacob Tonson, protected 26 June 1804, Petter Larsson, protected 25 January 1804 and Kraft Olson, protected 19 September 1804. These nmen were engaged by an American ship where they found the ship very leaky and refused to continue in her. The ship's master get them impressed in spite. He has applied to Captain Colquitt for their release, He says they were sent on board as mutineers and he could not release them without permission from the Admiralty.
