Folio 546: Letter dated 7 September 1803 by Rear Admiral Robert Montagu, HMS Utrecht, the Downs, to Captain George Cockburn, HMS Phaeton. The Admiralty have asked for a report on Christian Smith and Andres Nielson. who describe themselves as Danes. Captain Cockburn is to report on whether the men are married or settled in England, and whether they have received the bounty.
Folio 547: enclosed with folio 546. Captain George Cockburn, HMS Phaeton. Report on Christian Smith and Andrew Nielsen. Smith says he is a Dane, enclosed [no longer present] the certificate he produced. He was pressed at Elsinore out of the Benajmin and Elizabeth of London, is not married or settled in England. Nielsen says he was born in Norway, produced the enclosed [no longer present] certificate, and is not married or settled in England. He speaks fluent English and was pressed in Yarmouth Roads from an English brig, the Ploughman.
