Folios 458-459: Alexander Inglis Cochrane, HMS Northumberland, Cawsand Bay. His Agent T D Maude has informed him that the Commissioners for Victualling have made a charge against his pay for HMS Ajax of £176 relating to spirits which were issued to the crew of HMS Thetis and others who were helping them to man the plumps when the vessel was aground on the coast of North Carolina in the year 1795, while she was being towed round to the River Chesapeake and while she was refitting at Norfolk, Virginia. Asks for this charge to be removed, and refers the Admiralty to the letter he sent them at the time and to the letters of Rear Admiral George Murray, then Commander in Chief, Nova Scotia. None of the spirits were wasted, and the ship was saved by the exertions of these men who kept her afloat although the water was up to the level of the Gunroom.
