Administrative / biographical background

British Energy plc is the UK's largest electricity generator by volume; it is primarily an operator of formerly state-owned nuclear power stations. British Energy was established, and registered in Scotland, in 1995 to operate the eight most modern nuclear power plants in the UK. In 1996 the company was privatised. In September 2002, the Company approached the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for financial assistance because it otherwise risked falling into administration. In September 2004 the UK government's investment in the restructured firm was approved by the European Commission and the company was reclassified as a public body. Following negotiations, the DTI agreed to support a plan for restructuring which was completed in January 2005. The company has been a subsidiary of EDF Energy since 2009, previously having been a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index (British Energy was delisted from the London Stock Exchange on 3 February 2009), and the UK Government's interest in British Energy has been managed by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
