Administrative / biographical background

WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme) was launched on 15 November 2000 as a major new non-profit organisation set up to promote sustainable waste management. Its role is to remove barriers to waste minimisation, re-use and recycling, and to create stable and efficient markets for recycled materials and products. At its launch, WRAP was initially administered by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR), with financial contributions from the DETR, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the National Assembly for Wales, and the Scottish Executive. WRAP now works in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to help businesses and individuals reap the benefits of reducing waste, develop sustainable products. WRAP is backed by government funding from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and is a private company limited by guarantee.
