The Planning Inspectorate's main work is the processing of planning and enforcement appeals and holding inquiries into local development plans. It also deals with a wide variety of other planning-related casework including Listed Building consent appeals. The Inspectorate was established in 1992.
The Planning Inspectorate was responsible to the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR), and from 2002 the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, and subsequently the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
