Administrative / biographical background

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and military base. The Governor of Gibraltar has special responsibilities for the conduct in Gibraltar of external affairs, defence, internal security and certain functions in relation to public office. The Office of the Governor of Gibraltar supports dialogue between the Government of Gibraltar, and the UK Government on a range of issues to further develop the partnership between Britain and Gibraltar.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office was created in 1968. From 1969 to 1970 relations with Gibraltar came under the Gibraltar and South Atlantic Department (GSAD) and from 1972 to 1997 the Gibraltar General Department (GIB & GEN). The majority of the records within this fall within the period 1997 to 1993 when the Foreign & Commonwealth Office policy relating to Gibraltar came under the remit of the Southern European Department (SED).
