A letter from Edward Stanley to Wm [William] Fraser, dated at Customs House, London, concerning a French-language newspaper, the 'Gazette de Londres Extraordinaire', confiscated at Margate [Kent] from a passenger James Watson who has been suspected of carrying intelligence abroad. Enclosing: Folio 125. W Jordan and B Denne to the Commissioners of Customs, dated at Customs House, Sandwich. Folio 126. John Cowper, Rd [Richard] Laming and James Mitchener to the Collector and Comptroller of Customs at Sandwich [Kent], dated at Margate [Kent] Surveyor's office. Watson planned to travel to Ostend [Austrian Netherlands], but has been detained. Folio 128-131. Manuscript extract of the newspaper, dated 9 October 1780. Contains a despatch from Captain Ross, aid de camp to General Cornwallis, with news of the victory over the American rebels at Charlestown [Charleston, South Carolina].
