Description

Folios 115-122. A letter from Edward Stanley to Wm [William] Fraser, dated at Customs House, London, concerning a copy of 'Courier de l'Europe' being sent to Brussels [Austrian Netherlands] Enclosing: Folio 116. John Cowper and James Mitchener to the Collector and Comptroller of Customs at Sandwich [Kent], dated at Margate [Kent] Surveyor's office. They advise of having detained a parcel containing two-hundred newspapers, and seeking instructions. Folio 117. W Jordan and B Denne, dated at Customs House, Sandwich. Enclosing. Folio 118. Printed notice to subscribers of the 'Gazette Anglo-Francoise et Americaine' advising that the title is being discontinued and they will now receive the 'Courier' instead. Folio 119-122. Copy of the newspaper, edition XXVII, dated 3 October 1780. Contains the texts of correspondence, especially relating to British-American affairs, as well as shipping and commercial news. Gives the editor's address as 76 Long Acre, London [Middlesex]; and publisher as F Durham, at the Green Dragon on Fleet Street [London]. Mentions: Sir Henry Clinton; Lord George Germain; Lord Cornwallis; Rhodes Island; Long Island [New York]; Charles Town [Charleston, South Carolina]; and Martha's Vineyard [Massachusetts].
