Description

Folios 42-50. A letter from John Robinson to Sir Stanier Porten, dated at Treasury Chambers, concerning Robert Kirke's memorial seeking payment for his duties as agent and consul at Algiers [Barbay]. Enclosing: An order in Council dated 15 February 1780, recording that Kirke has been paid only part of what is due him, following an 'unjust' complaint made by Commodore [Thomas] Harrison in 1766. Signed W [William] Fawkener, [clerk of the Privy Council]. Folio 45-50. Kirke's memorial concerning his appointment as consul, his grievance, and a timeline of his naval career, including service aboard HMS ships 'Royal George', 'Lark', 'Norwich', 'Blenheim', and 'Neptune'. Includes certificates, dated on 13 Oct 1766, from: Mahomet Kiaya or 'chief justice of the soldiers Algeria in the west; Suliman Aga or general of the soldiers Algier in the West; Mahomet Dey of Algier in the West. Other certificates: Harrison; Ellp Smith; E Smith. Mentions: King Mustafa; Kirke's service as Judge Advocate at 'Lewisbourg' and Jamaica, and governor of Louisbourg [Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia]; General [Henry Seymour] Conway; the Earl of Shelburne; Lord Weymouth; Admiral Charles Knowles; Admiral Isaac Townsend; Thomas Innes; Mr Lindsay; and secretary Thomas Rumsey. Folio 50. Testimony of [Sir] R [Richard] Sutton to the Lord President [Earl Bathurst], dated at Berners Street [Westminster, Middlesex], on 28 January 1780, mentioning Colonel Egerton.
