Description

String-bound collection of extracts, cuttings and a booklet, covering Railway Correspondence and Travel Society, RCTS, 'Brunel Centenarian special' [train], 2 May 1959:

1) Cutting, [RCTS 'Observer' magazine, early 1959], advance information on the train, including planned route, timing and motive power.

2) Cutting, unidentified newspaper, [May 1959], 'Railway Enthusiasts in Critical Mood, Brunel Special Late', noting it ran half hour late at Saltash.

3) Booklet, tour guide published by RCTS, 8 pages, includes guide to route, historical notes, timings and mileage for Paddington to Saltash, Plymouth to Paddington, and Plymouth district rail tour.

4) Photograph, monochrome, 16cm x 21cm, front three-quarter right-side view, with typed cover note, 20 July 1959, 'arrival of train at Saltash Station', photograph shows train, hauled by 4-6-0 No 7001 'Sir James Milne', coming off Saltash Viaduct, reverse of photograph stamped 'Copyright of the Western Morning News [Company Limited], Plymouth'.

5) Card, typed 'Great Western Railway, RCTS Brunel Centenarian Special and the Plymouth District Rail Tour, Saturday 2 May 1959' with one envelope attached to reverse [sub-item 6] and three tickets, attached to front:

5-1) Second class, 'Special Arrangement', 'Plymouth District Rail Tour, Saltash to St Budeaux, Devonport Kings Rd, Plymouth Millbay, Plymouth Friary, Plymstock, Turnchapel, Yealmpton, Plymouth Friary, Mount Gould Junction, Laira Junction and Plymouth (North Road)', serial No 0139, pink.

5-2) British Transport Commission [Western Region], Plymouth (A), platform ticket, [charge] 2d, serial No 06175, white, punched.

5-3) Second class cheap day return, '1859-1959 Royal Albert Bridge Centenary', 'Plymouth to Saltash and back', serial No 0379, light blue with outline red 'D'.

6) Envelope, unmarked attached to reverse of sub-item 5, containing two cuttings, monochrome photographic illustrations, front three-quarter left-side views, [RCTS 'Railway Observer', June 1959, duplicates of two illustration in sub-item 7]:

6-1) 'Class O2 0-4-4T No 30182 with special motor train at Turnchapel'.

6-2) 'Castle class 4-6-0 No 5069 'Isambard Kingdom Brunel' leaving North Road on the return journey, Photographs S C Nash'.

7) Cuttings, typed 'Railway Observer, June 1959, pages 181 and 182', with unpaginated folio of five monochrome photographic illustrations, and feature article describing the special train and tour 2 May 1959, additional illustrations to sub-item 6 are: 'The Royal Albert Bridge, Saltash, floodlit, photograph J L Lean', front three-quarter left-side view 'Castle Class 4-6-0 No 7001 'Sir James Milne' leaving Reading on the down journey, photograph M W Earley', '6400 Class 0-6-0PT No 6420 and special auto train on Yealmpton branch, photograph Peter W Gray'.

8) Coloured line-drawn route map '61', [Railway Clearing House], for 'Devonport and Plymouth', showing lines of Great Western Railway, and Southern Railway, 1928.
