Description

Folios 150-159. A letter from Viscount Weymouth to the Treasury Commissioners, dated at St James's [Middlesex] concerning the expedition against Manilla [from 1762 to 1764]. Folio 151-152. Extract of Admiral [Sir Samuel] Cornish's private instruction, dated at Manila on 2 February 1763. Includes directions for General [Colonel William] Draper to establish a garrison; to pass any captured armaments and munitions to the East India Company; and reference to the EIC's ambitions in Mindanao. Copy certified by W Brereton. Folio 152A-153. Extract of a letter from Dawsonne Drake, deputy-governor of Manila, to Cornish, concerning security fears when Cornish departs, with risks posed by 'malcontents', a Spanish galleon 'Philippino', and other Spanish [Spain] and Dutch [Netherlands, Batavian] vessels. Folio 154-156. Account of Brereton's service, mentioning: his patron Admiral [?Charles] Watson; the attack on Chandermargore; his several battles with the French, including as captain of HMS 'Tyger'; the blockade of Pondicherry; command of HMS 'Falmouth'; his attack on Manilla castle and city; governorship of the Cavité district; command of naval forces for the conquest; 'troubles on the Coromandel coast' and Bengal; navigation to Batavia [Jakarta] during the monsoons; the galleon 'Siam'; his passage to Holland; and return home in 1765. Folio 157-159. Captain Brereton's memorial, dated at London. Mentions: the capture of the island of Luconia on 6 October 1762; capture of Manila and governorship of Cavité; and Brereton's memorial to the Earl of Rockingham in 1773.
