After 1999 and the introduction of devolved administration in Scotland, the Scotland Office became responsible for the representation of Scotland in HM Government (in succession to the Scottish Office) as a department of the UK Government within the Ministry of Justice and led by the Secretary of State for Scotland. The Scotland Office plays an essential role in managing day to day devolution issues between Westminster and the Scottish Parliament, liaising between the UK Government and the devolved Government, and administering the reserved matters of government in relation to Scotland (those which are still the responsibility of the UK Government - e.g. the Constitution, foreign affairs, defence, international development, national security, and others).
