S4C (or Sianel Pedwar Cymru, meaning Channel 4 Wales) is a Welsh television channel and the first to be aimed specifically at a Welsh-speaking audience. It was established in 1981 under the Broadcasting Acts 1980 and 1981 and launched in November 1982. Its remit is to provide a high quality television service in Wales, with substantial proportion in peak hours in the Welsh language. S4C is financed from its advertising revenue and a fixed annual grant from the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
