Description

Folios 194-197. Folio 194. Letter dated at Treasury Chambers from John Robinson to Sir Stanier Porten enclosing for Lord Weymouth's information and directions:- Folio 195. Copy letter dated at Custom House London from Edward Stanley to John Robinson enclosing a copy of an express received from the chief officers at Rye regarding 'two smuggling hovelars [havillers or huffler - one who carries off fresh provisions to a ship; a Kentish term] and a hog boat' [hog or heck-boat the old term for a pink]and requesting that it be laid before the Treasury Board for immediate directions because there is no fact stated by the officers at Rye that will justify detaining 'the vessels already under stop or stopping or detaining the others mentioned in the said letter under any law respecting the Revenue of Customs'. Folios 196-197. Copy of the letter dated at Custom House, Rye from the Collector and Deputy Comptroller to the Commissioners of Customs giving detailed information about the smuggling hovellers and hog boat and the work of Captain Haddock of the 'Stag' cutter in carrying out his orders. Admiral [Francis William] Drake is mentioned.
