Description

Folios 150-155. Folio 150. Letter dated at Treasury Chambers from John Robinson to Sir Stanier Porten enclosing for Lord Weymouth's information copies of the following:- Folio 151. Letter dated at Treasury Chambers and marked 'Private' from John Robinson to the Commissioners of Customs giving detailed instructions as to the disposition of their cutters and other vessels belonging to the coast of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, the Thames, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall in order to meet the threat from the French and Spanish combined fleet. At the foot of the letter 'A like letter to the Commissioners of Excise dated the same day'. Folio 152. Letter dated at Treasury Chambers from John Robinson to the Commissioners of Customs in Scotland that they 'forthwith order their cutters and other vessels to be manned and armed with the utmost dispatch to the fullest extent that they are capable of and at the same time direct them that' when so prepared they be ready to receive and obey further orders. A like letter to the Commissioners of Excise in Scotland dated and signed the same day. Folio 153. Letter dated 20 August 1779 at Treasury Chambers from John Robinson to the Customs' Commissioners to send immediate orders to their Revenue officers on the coasts of Cornwall and Devon to take on board 'such Admiralty officer as shall be directed to carry any dispatches from the Admiralty and to proceed with such officer as he shall desire and obey all orders he shall give. A like letter to the Commissioners of Excise dated the same day. Folio 154. Letter dated 20 August 1779 at Treasury Chambers from John Robinson to the Collectors of the Customs and of the Excise and to all other officers of the Revenue on the coasts of Cornwall and Devon that they forthwith give orders to the officers commanding the Revenue cutters and other vessels regarding the Admiralty dispatch officers. Folio 155. Letter dated 20 August 1779 dated at Treasury Chambers from John Robinson to the Collectors of the Customs and Excise and to other officers of the Revenue of the coasts of Cornwall and Devon notifying them of the appointment of Lieutenant [?George] Bowen as carrier of Admiralty dispatches.
