Folios 138-142. Folios 138-139. Letter dated at St James's from Lord Weymouth to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury enclosing for their consideration:- Folios 140-141. Copy of Captain William Brereton's petition dated 17 August 1779 at London to the King for relief. Brereton gives details of his more than thirty three years of service in the Royal Navy including his time as Governor of Cavité following the conquest of Manila, [Philippines]. After being ordered to give up the conquest to the Spaniards he transported the troops back to India when he 'was under the necessity of incurring heavy contingent expenses which (on account of its having been a conjunct expedition) have never been repaid to him'. Accompanying the petition is:- Folio 142. An account of Captain Brereton's contingent expenses incurred by his command at Manila showing disbursements of £3,583 plus interest of £2,056 and an additional £1,000 for 'his expenses in attending the fate of his memorials to Government and the India Company'.
