The Environmental Protection Act of 1990 created the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) which took office on the 1st April 1991. It assumed the duties and powers in Wales previously held by the Nature Conservancy Council (NCC) and Countryside Commission (CC). It was primarily funded by the Welsh Government. CCW's purpose was to: promote the conservation of the natural environment and the enhancement of natural beauty, encourage recreation and enjoyment of the Welsh countryside and advise Government on all matters relating to the countryside and nature conservation issues. It was merged with Forestry Commission Wales (FCW) and Environment Agency Wales (EAW) to form Natural Resources Wales (NRW) a single body managing Wales' environment and natural resources on the 1st April 2013.
