Tate Modern, London, is the national gallery of international modern art. Created in the year 2000 using the building of the disused Bankside power station , the scope of the collection is defined as art having been created since 1900.
The gallery was first conceived in the 1980s when it became clear to Tate that its collection had outgrown its home on Millbank. It was decided to create a new gallery to house Tate's international modern art, and a search began for a suitable site to build on, or a building that could be converted. The Bankside power station proved ideal for owing to its immense size, central location, and perceived architectural merit.
