Folios 171-172. Letter dated at 26 Southampton Row [Middlesex] from R Jennings to Lord Hillsborough. Jennings states his reasons for being a voluntary witness against Benjamin Bowsey, Francis Mockford and Thomas Haycock all of whom were found guilty with Mockford only being recommended for mercy. He says that although he knows it could not be considered in evidence, it has been suggested that if he had declared he had not seen Haycock on the night of the riot at Newgate 'it would have had weight with the jury in the prisoner's favour and if they had not acquitted him, at least recommended him' for mercy. In honour and for the sake of his conscience he declares that he did not observe Thomas Haycock during the destruction of Mr Akerman's house or Newgate prison during the riot. Jennings hopes and trusts that taking into consideration Haycock's bouts of insanity and other circumstances in his favour he will be granted mercy. He asks 'for a line of answer' at Hillsborough's leisure.
