Folios 148-149. Folio 148. Declaration by 15 men [? residents of Queen Street in the Park] that William Elliot one of the principal witness against Robert Roberts 'is a man of very doubtful character, and his veracity very questionable' and they think it extremely hard for Roberts 'to have his life sworn away by men of [such] complexion'. Below the signatures is a statement signed by William Horsman that William Elliot was never a tobacconist in the Borough but by trade a 'saler' [sadler] and worked journeywork in the Borough'. Folio 149. Petition of Mary Sweet 'the afflicted mother of Richard Roberts a convict under sentence of death in Newgate' to the King praying that her son be restored 'from an early ignominious death to a life dedicated in future' to the King's service in defence of the King and country against all enemies. Signed by the petitioner. Endorsed that Roberts is 16 years old and recommended by the jury as a proper object of clemency.
