Description

Folios 79-81. Folios 79-80. Letter dated at Terling Place [Essex] from John Strutt to [?Lord Hillsborough]. He reports that he dined with the writer of the enclosed letter and another dissenter and 'tho[ugh] they have a fixed aversion to Catholics, yet they disapprove in the strongest terms of the late violence' and gave every assurance that it was their sincere prayer to have peace and good order restored. Folio 81. Letter dated at Witham [Essex] from [unnamed] to John Strutt in which he comments 'you have heard me express great fear that the repeal of so many of the penal laws against Popery would some day occasion a great deal of bloodshed; I little thought my prophecy would be so soon fulfilled but I was confident the intolerant principles of popery could not be forgot nor glossed over to the people especially when they saw them increasing and practising so different a religion in public. It is however horrid to think of peoples pretending to preserve their religious Christian liberties in so unchristian a manner as the mobs are now doing in London'. Copy.
