Folios 50-54. Folios 50-53. A lengthy letter dated at Bath from Ja [James] Caldwell to [Lord Hillsborough] giving an account of the situation in Bath in particular regarding the destruction of the Catholic chapel. Caldwell is critical of the Mayor and Nat [Nathaniel] Jeffris the Town Clerk and expresses serious doubts about Jolie a perfumier, foreigner and Roman Catholic 'whose house was not in danger of combustibles'. Mr Palmer manager of the Play House and Mr Symons a surgeon are mentioned. Folio 54. Notice issued by John Chapman, Mayor of Bath, and Francis Bennett and Simon Crook Justices calling for information about the man described or of anyone else aiding, assisting or in any manner concerned with pulling down and setting fire to the Roman Catholic chapel and other adjoining houses and buildings.
