Description

Folios 303-304: William Bligh, Governor New South Wales, Sydney. Is sending further complaints of Captain Joseph Short against Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye, Master and of confining Lieutenant Tetley to his cabin and Daniel Lye for the second time to his cabin. A second Court of Enquiry was held and shows the cases not proved. Is sending the report of the Court of Enquiry.

Folios 304-305: Enclosed in folios 303-304: Captain Joseph Short, HMS Porpoise, Sydney Cove, 25th December 1806. When he returned to the ship he received a report from Mr. Basden that Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye had been making use of the most provoking language in the gun room. Evidence received from Mr. Pinio, Mr. Calver, Mr. Newsom, Mr. Olney, Mr. Linger and Mr. Hobbs.

Folios 306-307: Enclosure in folios 293-295: Governor William Bligh, Government House, Sydney to Captain Joseph Short, 25th December 1806. He will direct an enquiry to be held into the charges against Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye.

Folios 307-308: Enclosure in folios 293-295: Governor William Bligh, Governor New South Wales to Captain [Phillip Gridley] King, HMS Buffalo, 26th December 1806. Orders to proceed aboard HMS Porpoise, Captain [John] Houston and Lieutenant John Oxley to carry out an enquiry into the complaints of Captain Joseph Short against Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye.

Folios 309-313: Enclosure in folios 293-295: Report of the Court of Enquiry by Captain Phillip Gidley King, Captain John Houston and Lieutenant John Oxley. Detailed testimony from Mr. Basden, Purser, Mr. Pinio, Surgeon, Mr. Calver, Gunner, William Newsom, Mr. Aldridge, William Linser and Mr. Hobbs. They find the charges not proved and there seems to be a great deal of personal animosity between Captain Short and his Officers.

Folio 313: Enclosure in folios 293-295: Governor William Bligh to Captain Joseph Short 27th December 1806. Orders to liberate Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye.
