Description

Folio 271: Enclosure in folios 246-247: Governor William Bligh, Government House, Sydney, 10th December to Captain Joseph Short, Commander HMS Porpoise. Acknowledgement of letter received from Mr. Murphy, Midshipman, HMS Porpoise, which he believes must be incorrectly dated. He has received letters from Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye complaining about Captain Short. He has directed Captain [Philip Gidley] King, Captain [John] Houston and Lieutenant [John] Oxley to proceed aboard the ship to investigate all complaints.

Folios 272-273: Enclosure in folios 246-247: Governor William Bligh, Governor New South Wales and Captain of HMS Porpoise to Captain Philip Gidley King, HMS Buffalo, 10th December 1806. Orders to proceed aboard HMS Porpoise, with Captain John Houston and Lieutenant John Oxley, to investigate the complaints of Captain Joseph Short against Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye, Master, and their complaints against their commander.

Folios 273-284: Enclosure in folios 246-247: Report of the Court of Enquiry into the complaints of Captain Joseph Short, HMS Porpoise against Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye, Master and their counter complaints, 10th December 1806. Detailed testimony from Busden, Purser, Mr. Calver, Gunner, Mr. Hobbs, Boatswain, Mr. Bannister, Carpenter, Mr. Harding, John Seymour, Corporal William Stephens, James Allen, William Hervey, Boatswain’s Mate, Mr. Pinio, Adam Brown, John Bowman, Mr. Oldrey and John Woodhouse. Results find Captain Joseph Short did appropriate stores for his own use, he did loan an Armourer for a few days at the Cape of Good Hope and the Boatswain’s Mate as gardener to Mr. Fitz. He did also keep the boat crews up all night and much harsh language has been used against Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye, Master. He was also in a drunken state at the Cape of Good Hope. As to the complaints against Daniel Lye for disobedience of orders, he would simply deserve a reprimand. The complaints against Lieutenant Tetley and Daniel Lye for disrespect against Captain Short are not proved. They do not think the charges against Daniel Lye warrant a Court Martial and ask whether Governor Bligh considers there are grounds against Captain Short for a Court Martial.

Folios 290-291: Enclosure in folios 246-247: Duplicate of folio 265.

Folios 292-293: Enclosure in folios 246-247: William Bligh, Governor of New South Wales and Captain of HMS Porpoise to Captain Joseph Short, 23rd December 1806. Due to the remoteness from England so that Courts Martial cannot be held, he orders that any Officer made prisoner is to be reported to him immediately. Therefore, as no report of the confinement of Lieutenant Tetley was made, he orders that the Lieutenant is granted the usual recreation of leave.
