The Rent Service was established as an Executive Agency of the Department of the Environment, Transport and Regions (DETR) on 1 October 1999 and is wholly funded on a gross running costs basis. Its work mainly centres around the private rented housing sector in England, including: rental valuations for housing benefit purposes; the making of make fair rent determinations; advice to local authorities about the effects on rent of housing renovation grant applications by landlords; and the carrying out of rental valuations and the provision of information for a variety of customers within the public and private sector.
