Description

Folios 111-118. A letter from John Robinson to Sir Stanier Porten, dated at Treasury Chambers [Whitehall, Middlesex], concerning a schooner [the 'Elizabeth', William Robinson, master] reported to have been at Dunkirk [France] or Rotterdam [Holland] loaded with gunpowder for Philadelphia [Pennsylvania]. Enclosing: Folio 112. Secretary of the Board of Customs Edw [Edward] Stanley to Robinson, dated at Customs House, London. Enclosing: R Widger and H [Henry] Tolcher junior to the Customs Commissioners, dated at Customs House, Plymouth [Devon]. Provides a colourful and detailed description of a vessels which may include the one in Mr Stanley's letter of 28 October 1775. Folio 114. Robinson to Porten, dated at Treasury Chambers, on 4 November 1775. Enclosing: Folio 115. Stanley to Robinson, dated at Customs House London, on 2 November 1775. Folio 116-117. Tolcher and Widger, dated at Customs House, Plymouth, on 31 October. The 'Elizabeth' was reported to have been at Corunna [Galicia, Spain] and l'Orient [Lorient, Britanny, France], and headed for Dunkirk or Rotterdam and on to Philadelphia. The master appears a 'genteel young man', and he and his brother, the owner, 'go to sea rather for pleasure than any views of profit', but are trying to set up in the Lisbon trade. Captain Cassel of the 'Ranger' lugger is to monitor her. Folio 118-19. A letter to the Treasury Commissioners, dated at St James's [Middlesex], ordering the seizure of the 'Elizabeth'.
