Description

Captured ship: Providence of Kristiansand (master Jacob Jacobsen).

History: a Danish merchant ship (130 tons) bound from Bordeaux to Dunkirk, laden with wines, brandy, prunes, vinegar, paper, linseed, olives, anchovies and raisins; taken on 27 February / 9 March 1691 off the Isle of Wight by the privateer Postillion (Henry Martin commanding), and brought into Cowes.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 20:

  • [CP 1-CP 3]: four examinations, interrogatories, commission;
  • [CP 4-CP 6]: two allegations, interrogatories;
  • [CP 7]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Copenhagen;
  • [CP 8-CP 11]: two attestations sent in from Copenhagen, one with a translations, one further translation of a similar attestation that corresponds to SP 5;
  • [CP 12]: allegation;
  • [CP 13-CP 18]: two inventories with commissions of appraisement, one with an additional schedule of goods;
  • [CP 19-CP 21]: abstracts and translations of the ship's papers, abstracts of the bills of lading, docket.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 35:

  • SP 1-SP 7: certificates, ship's passes;
  • SP 8-SP 33: bills of lading;
  • SP 34-SP 35: ship's passes.

[Decision: ship and cargo condemned, 20 November 1691].
