Description

Captured ship: St Pierre Marie or St Peter Mary of St Malo (commander Robert des Sandrais or Elizée Chaille).

History: a French merchant ship with a letter of marque (200 tons, 18 guns) bound from Saint Domingue to St Malo, laden with indigo, tobacco, hides, and pieces of eight; taken in fight on 9/19 August 1694 off Ushant by HMS Foresight (John Manston commanding), and brought into Falmouth.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 11:

  • [CP 1-CP 3]: interrogatories, four examinations;
  • [CP 4]: allegation;
  • [CP 5-CP 7]: interrogatories, ten examinations regarding the disposal of goods immediately after capture [potential embezzlement];
  • [CP 8-CP 9]: two attestations responding to suspicions that a chest of French and Spanish coins aboard were embezzled by the crew at Falmouth;
  • [CP 10-CP 11]: docket for the ship's papers, envelope.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 15, letter of marque, receipt, bills of lading, with two issued at Saint Domingue for other ships, L'Annion Nouvelle (master Jean Bourget) and L'Europe (master Sieur de Carmand).

[Decision: ship and cargo condemned, 16 August 1694].
