Description

Captured ship: St Pieter or St Peter of Ostend (master Jacobus Gerbrandt).

History: a Spanish Netherlands ship (32 guns, men), bound from Ostend to Cadiz, laden with bale goods, including lace, thread, and ribbons; taken in March 1696 off Ushant by six French warships, retaken nine days later by HMS Anglesea (William Chaldwall commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 16:

  • [CP 1]: five examinations;
  • [CP 2-CP 4]: three sets of claims to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in London, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Seville, and Ghent;
  • [CP 5-CP 10]: allegation, with attestations and a petition from merchants in Virginia, asking Mary II to intercede with the Elector of Bavaria to recover their ship the Samuel of London;
  • [CP 11-CP 15]: two attestations as to the ship's cargo and capture, with annexed exhibits, including a letter, bill of lading, and a facture;
  • [CP 16]: attestation noting the receipt of a letter of attorney and stating the value of the ship.
