Description

Folios 173-182. A letter from Thos [Thomas] de Grey to Wm [William] Fraser, dated at Whitehall [Middlesex]. Concerns the condemnation in Admiralty of the 'Maria Christiana' at St Christophers [West Indies] after complaint from [Dutch ambassador] Count Welderen. Encloses: Folio 174. Governor [of the Leeward Islands] William Mathew Burt to Lord George Germaine, dated at St Christophers on 14 June 1779. Folio 175-178. Copies of letters from T Diant, dated at St Pierre Mtque [Martinique]: to Messrs Menard, Lacombe and Theard at St Eustache, on 5 March 1779; to Monsieur Gerard, ambassador to the United States of America, on 7 February 1779; to Monsieur Deane, deputes du Congress pres la Cour de France a Philadelphia; Monsieur le Ray de Chaumont, in 3 March 1779. Notarised by Thomas Johnston, and Harry Ambrose Hardy, and dated at St Christophers on 29 July 1779. Mentions: Marquis de Bouillé; 'mon negre [my negro, slave'] Crique'; 'mon negre Spadille'; Mrs Belot and Henry; Societé de Diant frères; Mrs Vernuede and companie [company]; le comte [Count] d'Estaing; Tiercons. Folio 179-180. Copy of the condemnation, dated at the house of John Blake, Sandy Point, St Chistophers, on 14 November 1778, before Archibald Esdale, judge surrogate.
