Description

Folios 147-150. A letter from Anth [Anthony] Todd to Sir Stanier Porten at St James's [Middlesex], dated at the General Post Office [London]. Concerns the establishment of a packet-boat service to Jersey and Guernsey. Enclosing: Folio 148-149. Anth [Anthony] Todd to [General] Henry S [Seymour] Conway, dated at the General Post Office [London]. Captain Samson, commander of the 'Express', has set out for Dover [Kent] to engage a cutter for intelligence gathering [during the invasion threat]. Suggests Southampton [Hampshire] as a possible base, and mentions Messrs Seward, Hilegrove and Durrel; the post master of Southampton, Mr Kellor; and Mr Phip [Philip] Hammond, linked to the postal service in Jersey.
