Description

Folios 116-119. A letter from Ja [James] Hammond to Sir Stanier Porten, Cleveland Row, dated at Dover [Kent]. Concerns allegations of ill-treatment from the press gang and populace made by Monsieur Boby de Vaux, a French gentleman, and Mynheer Vander [?van der] Straaten, a Dutch gentleman. Hammond believes the allegations to be ill-founded, and caused by treason charges being levelled against Nicholas Daniels alias [Nicholas] Martins, de Vaux's servant. Mentions: Mr Latham, justice of the peace, and young Mr Latham; Richard Barrett; Mr Valpy's number 13 Jermyn Street, St James's [Middlesex]; William Elbridge's examination by Mr Stringer, the mayor; William Popkys [Popkiss]; John Norris, tide-surveyor; Charles Marré [Mariee], John Edgerly and Robert Clement carrying intelligence to France. Folios 118-119. A letter from R Thompson, dated at the Post Office, Dover [Kent]. He has examined parcels and letters from London addressed to France, but learning nothing.
