Description

Captured ship: Nicholson or Nicholas of St Malo (master Peter or Pierre de Hamel).

History: a French merchant ship (300 tons, 22 guns, 40 men and a boy) bound from Morlaix to St Malo, laden with tallow, candles. herrings, oranges and greenfish; taken on 27 February / 9 March 1696/7 off Morlaix by the privateer Prosperous (Dennis Rous commanding), and brought into Guernsey.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 15:

  • CP 1-CP 3]: three examinations taken at Guernsey;
  • [CP 4]: four examinations taken at Weymouth;
  • [CP 5]: claim to the ship on behalf of merchants in London, which was previously captured and condemned as a prize in France;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: attestation as to the ship’s previous ownership and bill of sale;
  • [CP 8-CP 12]: legal proceedings taken on commission at Guernsey, including allegation, interrogatories, examinations, commission, docket;
  • [CP 13-CP 14]: inventory, commission of appraisement;
  • [CP 15]: docket for the ship’s papers.
Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 4, bills of lading, muster roll, ship’s pass.

[Decision: ship restored, paying salvage, cargo condemned 10 August 1697].
