Description

Captured ship: Mary Joseph of Marseilles (master Blaise Ventre).

History: a French merchant ship (36 tons) bound from Bordeaux to Lisbon, laden with wine and wrapping cloth; taken on 17/27 April 1692 off Cape Ortegal by the Falmouth packet boat Spanish Alliance (John Hutchins commanding), and brought into Falmouth.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 3:

  • [CP 1]: two examinations;
  • [CP 2]: allegation;
  • [CP 3]: Order from the Commissioners of the Admiralty directing the High Court to prosecute John Hitchins for allowing the vessel to be plundered.

[Decision: ship and cargo condemned, 23 May 1692].
