Description

Captured ship: Marie Jeanne or Jeanne of Rouen (master Guillaume De Lan).

History: a French ship (pink, 65 tons), likely bound from Isigny-sur-Mer; taken on [19] November 1695 off the coast of France by HMS Charles Galley (Stephen Elliot commanding), and brought into [Rye or Dover: see the letter from Rye of 21 November 1695, reporting that 'on Tuesday, Captain Elliot of the Charles galley sent a ketch in, loaded with tobacco and salt, that he had taken from a French fleet, which consisted of about 40 sails, somewhere near Cape la Hague. He took a pink at the same time and has gone to Dover. Chiefly the Captain is gone to view the rest of that fleet', at ADM 106/473/368.]

  • [CP 3]: further docket for the ship's papers, marked 'One hundred and twenty ship papers sent from the Lords of the Admiralty, 22 November 1695', addressed to Sir Charles Hedges.

Ship's Papers [198 papers] in two bundles numbered SP A/1-SP A/78 and SP B/1-SP B/120, the archive of the master, Guillaume De Lan, dating from 1683-1694 [a very good example of a master's archive]:

  • SP A/36-SP A/61: ship's passes, certificates, letter to a woman in Le Havre, provision list, ship's pass, accounts or invoices;
  • SP A/62-SP A/78: letters to the captain at St Valery and Isigny-sur-Mer, accounts or invoices, navigation notes similar to a log relating to a voyage in the Mediterranean, cargo list, accounts, order for provisions with notice of rations for sailors, list of naval ships based out of French ports.

  • SP B/1 -SP B/18: ship's passes, receipts, muster roll, certificate;
  • SP B/19-SP B/40: letters to the captain at Rotterdam, invoices, cockets, ship's passes, muster roll, lighthouse pass, certificates, receipts;
  • SP B/41-SP B/98: letters to the captain at Dunkirk, receipts and invoices, cocket, ship's passes, certificates, accounts, customs papers;
  • SP B/99-SP B/120: lists of signals, ship's passes, certificates, receipts and accounts, bill of lading, letters to the captain at Isigny-sur-Mer.
